The Zambian government has unveiled ambitious plans to build a new airport in Chinsali, Muchinga Province, and to expand the runway at Mansa Airport in Luapula Province, as part of a deliberate strategy to strengthen infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.
Frank Tayali, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, announced the government’s goals during an interview with Delight Radio, emphasizing the tremendous influence these projects will have on the country’s development landscape. With construction planned to begin in July 2024 and completion expected within three years, Chinsali’s new airport is a critical step toward improving transportation networks and sparking regional economic growth.
The decision to entrust the Zambia National Service (ZNS) with the construction underscores the government’s commitment to realizing these infrastructural advancements. Tayali emphasized the pivotal role of robust transportation infrastructure in fostering sustained growth and socio-economic transformation, emphasizing the importance of a well-functioning transport system in Muchinga Province.
“For us to achieve a diversified and resilient economy, we have to build a well-functional transport system here in Muchinga Province, and this means the province’s status will be improved,” Tayali remarked, echoing sentiments of progress and development.
Simultaneously, the government unveiled plans for the expansion of Mansa Airport’s runway in Luapula Province, a strategic move aimed at accommodating larger aircraft like the Boeing 777. Ministry of Information and Media Director Spokesperson, Henry Kapata, detailed the project’s scope, highlighting the extension of the runway from 1.7 km to 3 km. This expansion not only facilitates the landing and take-off of bigger aircraft but also enhances safety measures with the construction of a new fire station and perimeter fence.
Kapata underlined that moving the runway further away from buildings decreases the potential of structural damage in the case of an accident, demonstrating the government’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety a nd efficiency of regional air travel.
These infrastructure projects are more than just construction; they are significant investments in Zambia’s future. By expanding transportation networks and renovating airport facilities, the government wants to attract investment, improve trade, and boost tourism, resulting in economic growth and job creation.
Furthermore, these measures are consistent with the broader developmental goals described in Zambia’s national development agenda, which promote inclusive growth and regional integration. Improved connection not only improves market access, but also makes it easier to transfer commodities and people, promoting economic diversification and minimizing inequities between urban and rural areas.
The Chinsali airport project, in particular, has the potential to transform Muchinga Province into a commercial, tourism, and investment destination. As the region’s connection increases, so will the prospects for local businesses and communities to flourish.
Finally, the Zambian government’s commitment to expanding airport infrastructure demonstrates its priority to promoting sustainable development and driving economic advancement. Zambia’s investment in transportation networks lays the framework for a more affluent and connected future, one full of possibilities and inclusive prosperity. As work begins and these projects are completed, the nation will reap the benefits of its innovative infrastructure investments.
