The Zambian government has unveiled ambitious plans to build a new airport in Chinsali, Muchinga Province, and to expand the runway at Mansa Airport in Luapula Province, as part of a deliberate strategy to strengthen infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.
Frank Tayali, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, announced the government’s goals during an interview with Delight Radio, emphasizing the tremendous influence these projects will have on the country’s development landscape. With construction planned to begin in July 2024 and completion expected within three years, Chinsali’s new airport is a critical step toward improving transportation networks and sparking regional economic growth.
The decision to entrust the Zambia National Service (ZNS) with the construction underscores the government’s commitment to realizing these infrastructural advancements. “For us to achieve a diversified and resilient economy, we have to build a well-functional transport system here in Muchinga Province, and this means the province’s status will be improved,” Tayali remarked, echoing sentiments of progress and development.
Simultaneously, the government unveiled plans for the expansion of Mansa Airport’s runway in Luapula Province, a strategic move aimed at accommodating larger aircraft like the Boeing 777. Ministry of Information and Media Director Spokesperson, Henry Kapata, detailed the project’s scope, highlighting the extension of the runway from 1.7 km to 3 km. This expansion not only facilitates the landing and take-off of bigger aircraft but also enhances safety measures with the construction of a new fire station and perimeter fence.
Kapata underlined that moving the runway further away from buildings decreases the potential of structural damage in the case of an accident, demonstrating the government’s commitment to guaranteeing the safety a nd efficiency of regional air travel.
