A significant advancement in regional air connectivity has been achieved with the signing of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the Republic of Zambia and the Kingdom of Eswatini. This agreement officially paves the way for the establishment of direct commercial flights between the two countries, marking an important step in enhancing travel and trade possibilities. The signing ceremony took place on the sidelines of the 10th Africa Indian Ocean Aviation Week held in Victoria Falls, a key event that highlights advancements in aviation across the continent.
Transport Minister Hon. Museba F. Tayali underscored the importance of this agreement, stating that it is not only a bilateral milestone but also a testament to the shared commitment of both nations to liberalize air transport. This initiative aligns with the objectives set forth by the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and supports the African Union’s Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) agenda, which aims to foster seamless air travel throughout Africa.
Representing Eswatini, Mr. Thulani Mkhalipi, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, confirmed that the Kingdom intends to launch its inaugural direct flight to Zambia in September. To prepare for this historic event, a preparatory visit and discussions regarding operational logistics are scheduled for June. This initiative is expected to boost tourism, facilitate easier business connections, and enhance the overall economic relationships between the two nations.
