Mozambique’s Port of Maputo Achieves Record 32 Million Tonnes

The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) has reported its operational results for 2025, showcasing significant growth and continued investment in Mozambique’s logistics.

In 2025, the Port of Maputo handled a record 32.0 million tons, a 3.4% increase from 30.9 million in 2024, reinforcing its position as a key regional logistics hub. MPDC’s operations also reached a record high, processing 15.2 million tons, with year-on-year growth of 6.4%, thanks to ongoing investments in infrastructure and efficiency.

Rail traffic increased by 17%, rising from 9.7 million tons in 2024 to 11.7 million tons in 2025. MPDC contributed USD 48.9 million in concession fees to the Mozambican government, an increase from USD 46.8 million the previous year, reflecting both higher activity levels and the company’s commitment to economic value.

“These results stem from the collaborative efforts of our teams and partners. Achieving record volumes while investing in capacity and social impact illustrates the resilience of the Port of Maputo,” stated CEO Osório Lucas.

Significant infrastructure projects progressed, including the Kanyaka island pier bridge, set for completion in March 2026, aimed at improving access for the island community.

The Port continued its investment in capacity enhancement, including expanding the bulk terminal to 16 million tons, the DP World container terminal to 530,000 TEUs, and Grindrod’s magnetite and coal terminal to 12 million tons. These efforts align with MPDC’s long-term strategy to make the Port of Maputo a modern and integrated logistics hub supporting regional trade and sustainable development.
