The European Union (EU) has extended a commendation to Zambia for its proactive efforts in enhancing its transport sector, particularly focusing on the revitalization of its railway infrastructure. Henrik Hololei, the EU Delegation Director General for International Partnerships on Railways, expressed the EU’s readiness to provide financial assistance to Zambia, aiming to ensure the full functionality of its railway transport network.
During a meeting with Zambia’s Transport and Logistics Minister, Frank Tayali, Mr. Hololei reiterated the EU’s commitment to collaborating with Zambia and other stakeholders of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) to actualize the revitalization of the railway sector. He emphasized that the EU sees Zambia’s dedication to optimizing all modes of transportation as a positive step towards enhancing connectivity and facilitating economic growth within the region.
Mr. Hololei highlighted the significance of revamping Zambia’s railway sector, emphasizing its potential to be a game changer for the country’s economic transformation. The efficient operation of railway transport not only improves logistics and trade facilitation but also creates employment opportunities, stimulates industrial growth, and fosters sustainable development across various sectors of the economy.
In response, Minister Tayali expressed appreciation for the EU’s support and affirmed Zambia’s commitment to strengthening ties with the EU. He disclosed that the Ministry of Transport had initiated efforts to repeal the existing railway act, aiming to create a more conducive regulatory environment that welcomes participation from various players in the railway sector. This move reflects Zambia’s determination to foster a competitive and dynamic railway industry that can effectively meet the country’s transportation needs and contribute to its overall development objectives.
The potential benefits of reviving Zambia’s railway industry are immeasurable. Zambia is well-positioned to gain much from a functional railway network due to its abundance of natural resources and advantageous geographic position. By strengthening Zambia’s position as a major transit hub for regional trade and business, improved railway connection also benefits domestic transportation. In addition, effective rail transportation eases traffic, minimizes the need for road networks, and cuts down on transportation expenses, all of which improve Zambian goods’ competitiveness in both local and foreign markets.
Partnering with the EU and other foreign organizations will be essential to Zambia’s efforts to revive its railway industry by providing the know-how, funding, and technical support needed. Through the utilization of railway transport, Zambia can initiate a route towards a future that is more robust and wealthy, wherein effective and sustainable transportation networks form the foundation of regional connectivity and economic growth.
