This remarkable development was made possible by the extensive rehabilitation of Malawi’s railway line, which had fallen into disrepair over the past several decades. The fuel train arrived in Malawi’s southern region, carrying an impressive 1.2 million liters of fuel, marking a significant achievement for the nation.
President Lazarus Chakwera, who personally inaugurated the train’s arrival, hailed this occasion as a “great milestone” for Malawi, emphasizing its potential to substantially contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. President Chakwera reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to improving and modernizing essential systems to enhance the overall standard of living for Malawians.
Renowned economist Milward Tobias lauded the arrival of the fuel train as a “step in the right direction” for Malawi’s economy. He highlighted the crucial shift to rail transport, which is anticipated to result in substantial cost savings in fuel transportation, ultimately benefitting the nation’s economy.
It’s noteworthy that, since 1993, the previous administrations favored road transport for importing fuel from Mozambique and Tanzania, neglecting the railway network. This long-overdue development symbolizes a significant positive change in Malawi’s transportation and economic landscape.
