Traxtion Expands African Rail Operations with Lobito Atlantic Railway Agreement

By agreeing to lease G18U shunting locomotives from Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR), the South African railway business Traxtion has increased its footprint in Africa. Lobito Port, a crucial transportation hub that links Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), will be serviced by these locomotives. This collaboration is another step toward increasing the effectiveness of freight transportation along this vital trade route.

Previously, Traxtion and LAR had agreed on leasing U20C locomotives, which are essential for transporting copper ore and other freight from the DRC. However, at the Angolan border, these locomotives are replaced before the trains continue their journey toward Lobito Port. One of the main challenges faced along this route is infrastructure constraints, which make it difficult for long trains to move freely. To address this, the use of shunting locomotives has become necessary.

The newly leased G18U shunting locomotives will play a crucial role in improving the efficiency of mainline trains. By allowing smooth movement of freight within Lobito Port, these locomotives will help reduce delays and enhance overall railway operations. Additionally, as part of the agreement, Traxtion will be responsible for maintaining the locomotives, ensuring their long-term performance and reliability. The company will also train local railway specialists, equipping them with the necessary skills to operate and manage the locomotives effectively.

The first G18U shunting locomotive has already arrived in Angola, signaling the beginning of this collaboration. The second locomotive is currently in its final preparation stage before being shipped. This expansion reflects Traxtion’s growing footprint in Africa, as its railway rolling stock is now in operation across nine African countries.

This partnership benefits not only Traxtion and LAR but also the larger regional trade network by enhancing the effectiveness of train transport. Mining industries and other enterprises will find it easier to transport goods efficiently thanks to the upgraded railway system, which will promote economic growth. Such partnerships will be crucial to modernizing Africa’s transportation networks and increasing cross-border commerce connectivity as railway infrastructure continues to advance.

Traxtion’s dedication to skill development, innovation, and maintenance emphasizes its position as a major force in the African railway industry. The business is in a strong position to support the ongoing expansion and transformation of railway transportation on the continent with additional investments and strategic alliances.
