Land Linked Zambia 2025 to Tackle Transport and Logistics Challenges in Mining Sector

Chimwemwe Nyirenda, the CEO of Africast Limited, has emphasized the significance of tackling logistics and transportation issues in Africa’s mining industry in advance of the fourth Land Linked Zambia event. Key stakeholders will gather at the forum, which is set to take place in Lusaka this year, to talk about creative ways to lower expenses and boost productivity in mining logistics.

Nyirenda emphasized that high transport and logistics expenses remain a major challenge for mining companies operating in Africa. He noted that several practical measures could help companies significantly cut costs. These include advance procurement planning, collaborating with local suppliers, making better use of rail transport, optimizing logistics processes, fostering regional cooperation, and investing in infrastructure. By implementing these strategies, mining firms can improve operational efficiency while reducing financial burdens.

He cited the example of a mining conglomerate operating in Zambia, which has an annual budget of $819 million and allocated $4.7 million specifically to transport and logistics. Through various cost-saving measures, the company has already saved $0.5 million. However, Nyirenda pointed out that further opportunities exist for cost optimization, and the upcoming event will provide a platform for industry experts to explore new and innovative solutions.

Under the theme “Embracing SMART Transport Corridors in Africa,” the Land Linked Zambia forum aims to drive discussions on modernizing Africa’s transport networks to support the mining sector. The event will focus on strategies such as the use of digital technology in logistics, the importance of sustainable transport corridors, and ways to strengthen regional trade links. By embracing SMART (Sustainable, Modern, Accessible, Reliable, and Technology-driven) transport solutions, the mining sector can enhance its competitiveness and contribute to economic growth.

The cost of logistics and transportation has a big impact on how profitable mining operations are. Companies may find it challenging to maintain their competitiveness in the global market due to factors including ineffective supply chains, poor infrastructure, and excessive transportation costs. For stakeholders, the Land Linked Zambia event will be an essential platform for exchanging ideas, talking about best practices, and investigating cooperative solutions to these problems.

With mining being a key driver of Africa’s economy, addressing logistical inefficiencies will be crucial in ensuring long-term sustainability and growth. The discussions at the forum are expected to shape future policies and investments in transport infrastructure, ultimately benefiting the broader mining sector and the economies of mining-dependent nations.
