Angola has inaugurated a new $635 million border complex at the Luvo border post in Zaire Province, strategically located near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This significant development is part of Angola’s initiatives to enhance trade relations between the two countries, aligning with the principles of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The state-of-the-art complex comprises 38 interconnected buildings that collectively house essential services, including customs, police, immigration, and phytosanitary activities. This integrated approach replaces the previous operational model, in which these agencies operated separately, creating a streamlined process for both officials and traders.
This new infrastructure is designed to facilitate smoother cross-border trade, with the current daily traffic of around 50 cargo trucks expected to increase significantly. Government officials anticipate that the upgraded customs checks will not only enhance the efficiency of border crossings but also boost tax revenues and curtail the prevalence of informal trade practices that have hampered economic growth.
In addition, the Angolan government is planning to establish a comprehensive border logistics hub. This hub is expected to attract private investments focused on enhancing storage and processing services, further contributing to the region’s economic development.
The Luvo border post is part of a broader strategy to improve transportation routes connecting the DRC to Angolan ports, a vital link supporting regional trade expansion. Despite current trade volumes remaining relatively low, officials are optimistic about future growth as regional integration efforts advance.
In 2024, Angola’s exports to the DRC reached approximately $173 million, primarily comprising raw iron bars, tugboats, and iron ingots. Conversely, imports from the DRC totaled about $5.42 million, comprising machinery, beauty products, and surveying equipment. This bilateral trade, while modest at present, has the potential to flourish as the new border complex enhances connectivity and fosters economic ties between Angola and the DRC.
