Tanzania and Egypt have started significant deliberations on how to enhance the transport and logistics infrastructure, with the primary aim being to increase the Port of Dar es Salaam. The negotiations were held in Dar es Salaam in a high-level meeting between the officials of the two countries.
The Director of Economic Diplomacy of Tanzania, Ambassador John Ulanga, welcomed the Egyptian Ambassador to Tanzania, Sherif Ismail, to discuss their economic relationship and explore new opportunities to collaborate. One of the issues was that Egypt was interested in promoting shipping and cargo activities in the port, which is one of the busiest in East Africa.
The expansion of the port is likely to make Tanzania capable of accommodating more cargo, as well as enhancing its position as a trade hub in the region. The Port of Dar es Salaam is of great significance not only to Tanzania, but also to adjacent landlocked nations like Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which use it as a source of imports and exports.
Analysts believe that such a collaboration would be of significant advantage. Egypt has a very good experience in handling large maritime projects, particularly the Suez Canal, which is one of the most significant shipping routes in the world. Other large ports in the country include Alexandria and Port Said. This experience may assist Tanzania in modernizing its port and enhancing efficiency.
The time of these negotiations is also a factor. Infrastructure has been a central subject in many African countries that are working towards enhancing trade as part of the African Continental Free Trade Area. More efficient ports, roads, and rail services should be provided to make trade within the continent easier and cheaper.
In the case of Egypt, the alliance will provide Egypt with an opportunity to increase its economic influence in East Africa. It would also assist Egyptian goods to more readily reach the expanding East African market. In the case of Tanzania, collaborating with Egypt will mean an additional powerful partner, as it keeps on building its infrastructure with the help of such countries as China, Turkey, and European countries.
The deliberations went beyond the port itself as well. The two nations are interested in enhancing the entire transport infrastructure, such as roads and railways. Tanzania is already striving to upgrade its central railway and build road links. These additions, alongside a modernized port, would have a more powerful logistics system capable of facilitating more trade effectively.
Analysts reckon that in case these plans are effectively put in place, transport costs may fall drastically, up to 30 percent. This would enhance the attractiveness of Tanzania to investors and enable businesses to transport goods at a reduced cost and faster rates.
As a way of progressing the plans, the two countries have agreed to constitute technical teams, which will come up with detailed proposals. There are more meetings likely to take place over the next month or so to transform these ideas into actual projects.
The partnership between Tanzania and Egypt shows a growing trend of African countries working together to improve infrastructure and boost trade. Provided successfully, the Port of Dar es Salaam expansion will make Tanzania an even more potent trading gateway in East Africa.
