Botswana and Namibia Push Ahead with Trans Kalahari Railway Project

Progress has been made in both Botswana and Namibia on preparations to construct the Trans Kalahari Railway (TKR), a major rail project that will facilitate trade and transport in Southern Africa. The proposed railway will link Botswana with the Port of Walvis Bay, Namibia, thus enabling the landlocked nation access to the Atlantic Ocean. The new railway line will run from north of Walvis Bay through Botswana, forming a specific freight corridor and facilitating the trade of goods between Botswana and other countries.

It is hoped that the railway will complement the existing Trans Kalahari Road corridor, which is already in use to carry goods to and from Botswana and Namibia. With the addition of the rail option, businesses will have a quicker and more cost-effective method of transporting material. Rail can also be used for heavy loads like minerals, agricultural goods, fuel and other bulk goods. This is likely to alleviate congestion on the roads, and to lower transport costs and hence the overall efficiency of regional trade.

The railway will also help to boost the economies of both countries, according to Botswana’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. The project will generate employment and foster investment opportunities in industries, logistics and related areas during the construction and operation. Improved transport infrastructure will also enable companies to have more access to new markets and enhance trade within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The railway will offer another transport route for Botswana, thus decreasing the reliance on the other transport routes. Namibia’s Port of Walvis Bay will also see increased traffic in cargo volumes during this period, consolidating its role as a hub for logistics in the region.

The two governments are still meeting to take the project forward. The next meeting on the discussions will be in Kasane, Botswana, where Ministers, Government officials and technical experts of the two nations will share with each other what has been accomplished thus far. They will be asked to bring up key factors like the technical specifications, funding options, schedules for implementation, and the legal and regulatory aspects necessary for the railway’s development. The purpose of these conversations is to keep the project on track and organized.

The Trans Kalahari Railway will be an integral component of the transport infrastructure in Southern Africa when it is finished. The project will enhance rail connectivity to the Port of Walvis Bay to facilitate the transport of goods in the region at a lower cost and in a convenient manner. It is also expected to encourage regional integration, enhance regional trade among SADC member countries, and contribute to sustainable economic development. The railway is expected to contribute significantly to the regional connectivity between Botswana and Namibia, and enhance economic opportunities for businesses and communities in Southern Africa. The project will continue to be developed in collaboration with Namibia, and is expected to contribute significantly to the region’s connectivity and economic opportunities.
