Southern Africa’s aviation sector is poised for a historic milestone as Eswatini Air prepares to launch the first-ever nonstop route between the Kingdom of Eswatini and Zambia. The new service, scheduled to begin on 1 April 2026, will directly connect King Mswati III International Airport with Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, marking a significant breakthrough in regional air connectivity.
Until now, travellers journeying between Eswatini and Zambia have had to transit through Johannesburg, adding hours to travel time and increasing costs. The new nonstop service will eliminate the need for a South African stopover, offering a faster, more convenient alternative for both leisure and business passengers. The move is widely seen as a strategic step toward strengthening intra-African connectivity and improving access within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Launched in 2022 under the Royal Eswatini National Airways Corporation, Eswatini Air has steadily expanded its footprint across the region. Operating under the slogan “Everyone Must Fly,” the airline has positioned itself as an affordable regional carrier focused on short-haul routes. Its current network includes major destinations such as Cape Town, Durban, and Harare. The addition of Lusaka signals the airline’s intent to deepen its regional presence and tap into new commercial and tourism flows.
For the travel trade, the new route presents strong commercial opportunities. Eswatini offers a distinctive blend of cultural heritage, traditional ceremonies, and wildlife experiences, while Zambia remains one of Africa’s leading safari destinations. Visitors are drawn to attractions such as South Luangwa National Park, Lower Zambezi National Park, and the iconic Victoria Falls. A direct link between the two countries simplifies the creation of multi-destination travel packages, allowing tour operators to combine Eswatini’s intimate game reserves with Zambia’s world-renowned safari circuits without complicated connections.
Business travellers are also expected to benefit from the new service. Improved air access enhances trade, investment, and corporate mobility between the two nations. By cutting transit time and streamlining travel logistics, the route strengthens economic ties and supports regional integration goals.
While flight schedules, frequencies, aircraft type, and fare details have yet to be announced, Eswatini Air has indicated that operational specifics will be released in the coming weeks. Industry stakeholders are watching closely, as early booking access and competitive pricing could drive strong initial demand.
The broader significance of this development reflects a growing trend across Africa, where smaller national carriers are stepping in to address longstanding connectivity gaps. By introducing direct routes that bypass traditional hub airports, airlines like Eswatini Air are contributing to a more interconnected and competitive aviation landscape.
As the April 2026 launch approaches, the Eswatini–Zambia corridor is set to become more accessible than ever before. For travellers, businesses, and tourism operators, the new direct service represents not just a flight, but a step forward in reshaping regional mobility and unlocking fresh opportunities across Southern Africa.
