Zambia is projected to yield approximately 5 million metric tonnes of maize

Zambia is projected to achieve a remarkable maize harvest this year, with forecasts indicating production will reach nearly 5 million metric tonnes—an impressive increase from last year’s 3.9 million tonnes. This anticipated success can be attributed to a combination of favorable weather conditions throughout the growing season, which have provided the necessary climatic support for optimal crop growth, and the timely distribution of essential agricultural inputs, including high-quality seeds and fertilizers. Additionally, strong government initiatives aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity have played a crucial role in this achievement.

Mr. Patrick Kangwa, who serves as the Secretary to the Cabinet, acknowledged the remarkable efforts of Zambian farmers, commending their dedication and resilience in the face of ongoing challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s ambitious goal to elevate maize production to 10 million metric tonnes by the year 2031. This objective is part of a broader strategic vision aimed at ensuring food security and fostering economic development across the nation.

The recent Crop Forecasting Survey also highlights encouraging outlooks for other vital crops, such as rice and wheat. This trend underscores the critical need for agricultural diversification to safeguard food supplies and enhance national food security, particularly as global challenges continue to affect food production systems.

However, the agricultural sector faces persistent challenges, with experts forecasting below-average rainfall for the 2026/2027 growing season, posing a significant threat to crop yields. To mitigate these potential impacts, specialists advocate for strengthening climate resilience strategies and adopting climate-smart farming practices. These measures are essential to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and to promote sustainable agricultural development in the future, ensuring that Zambia can maintain its trajectory toward agricultural prosperity and self-sufficiency.
