The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has formally commenced construction on an ambitious new Training Centre and a state-of-the-art Operations Control Centre in Dar es Salaam, signaling a significant step forward in its broader revitalisation initiative. This notable groundbreaking ceremony marks a pivotal transition from strategic planning to actionable implementation, instilling a sense of optimism among employees and stakeholders who are eager to see tangible developments in this important project.
During the ceremony, key officials, including Prof. Godius Kahyarara, underscored the critical importance of adhering to high standards of quality and safety throughout the construction process. They also emphasized the necessity for effective skills and technology transfer to TAZARA employees, ensuring that the workforce is well-equipped to handle the evolving demands of modern railway operations.
Spanning an expansive 21,800 square metres, the new Training Centre is designed to accommodate a variety of training modalities, featuring specialized training labs, modern classrooms, and administrative offices. The Centre aims to provide comprehensive educational programs that are integral to cultivating a new generation of skilled railway professionals. By enhancing the technical expertise required for operating and maintaining advanced railway systems and infrastructure—an integral part of the revitalisation efforts—this facility will play a critical role in preparing TAZARA’s workforce for the challenges ahead.
The construction of both the Training Centre and the Operations Control Centre is being funded by the Government of China, reflecting a commitment to bolstering the local technical workforce as well as improving overall operational efficiency across the TAZARA railway network. The Training Centre is positioned to not only educate future railway professionals but also to instill a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skills essential for the evolving transport sector. Meanwhile, the Operations Control Centre is set to function as the central hub for coordinating train movements along TAZARA’s extensive 1,860-kilometre railway network, facilitating better logistical management and operational oversight.
