Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema, has pledged to upgrade Mansa, Kasama, and Nakonde airports to international standards as part of his broader vision to boost economic development in the Northern Corridor. Speaking at the Kwabuka Traditional Ceremony in Mansa on Sunday, the President emphasized his administration’s determination to turn Luapula Province into an economic hub, bringing significant growth to the region.
“We will transform Mansa, Kasama, and Nakonde into international airports to help the region achieve significant economic growth,” President Hichilema declared, stressing that this move would be a milestone in Zambia’s development. He assured citizens that the Northern Corridor, encompassing Mansa, Kasama, Mbala, and Nakonde, would undergo a major overhaul to develop key infrastructure critical to economic activity. For the first time, Mansa Airport will be transformed into an international facility, providing greater connectivity and trade opportunities for the region.
President Hichilema also called for unity among Zambians to support the government’s efforts to repair systems he described as being in a poor state when his administration took office. He assured the nation that tangible progress under the United Party for National Development (UPND) leadership would be visible within a year.
The President’s announcements received a warm response from traditional leaders and local communities, who praised his initiatives while highlighting areas needing urgent attention. At the same event, Chief Nsamba, Vice Chairperson of the Luapula Council of Chiefs, appealed for more focus on regional development priorities. He urged the government to prioritize the revival of Mansa Batteries and the rehabilitation of deteriorating road networks in the province.
“We are grateful for the ongoing efforts, but we hope to see the revival of Mansa Batteries and critical road upgrades. Additionally, the vast water resources in Northern and Luapula provinces should be utilized for hydropower generation,” Chief Nsamba said. He pointed to the untapped potential of the Chambeshi River in Northern Province, which could serve as a critical resource for generating hydropower and driving sustainable energy solutions for Zambia.
Chief Nsamba also commended the government for its increased allocation to the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the implementation of free education, both of which have had a direct positive impact on the lives of citizens in the region. However, he stressed that improving infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and airports, remains a pressing priority for ensuring sustainable development and improving access to markets.
The President’s vision aligns with his administration’s broader goal of decentralizing economic development to empower regions and enhance their contributions to Zambia’s national economy. Transforming Mansa, Kasama, and Nakonde airports to international standards is expected to significantly improve trade, tourism, and investment opportunities in the region.
As Zambia continues its development journey, the collaboration between the government and traditional leaders will play a crucial role in addressing regional challenges. By focusing on infrastructure, energy resources, and economic hubs, President Hichilema’s administration aims to create a sustainable path to prosperity for Northern Zambia and the country as a whole.
